<P>Begins in 1835 as the Cholera Special Committee, but was renamed the Sanitary Committee the following year. It became the Health Committee in 1923. In 1962 the Health and Welfare Committees merged to form Health and Social Services Committee but this arrangement lasted only until 1971 when the two functions were once again split. Discontinued 1974. Functions assumed by new Health and Environment Committee.</P>
