| Title | Newcastle upon Tyne Jewish Welfare Society |
| Date | 1926 - 1997 |
| Description | Formed in 1872 as the Hebrew Friend in Need Society, it changed its name to the Newcastle Jewish Board of Guardians in 1873. Its purpose was "relieving Jewish poor and [to] grant loans". Funds were obtained by subscriptions and donations and from 1899 by an annual ball and supper. Charitable work with newer immigrants was important in the earlier years, followed by the provision of loans to set up in trade and to cover times of depression. With the introduction of the welfare state, the emphasis changed to welfare work with the elderly and sick and the name was changed again. A housing association was formed in 1970 and flats built in Jesmond. The organisation was removed from the Register of Charities in 2002. |
