TitleSouth Shields Hebrew Congregation
Date1890-1997
AdminHistoryThe first Jewish families appear to have arrived in South Shields in the 1840s but had no religious services of their own until about 1880 when services were held in a private house. Various halls were then used as temporary synagogues until a house in Charlotte Square was purchased in 1897. In the early 1900s there was a split in the community but this was resolved and in 1914 new premises were purchased in Ogle Terrace (later renamed Beach Road). These were demolished in 1932 and a new synagogue and communal hall built. By the late 20th century the congregation had dwindled to just a few families, and the synagogue closed in 1994.
