  <dc:description>Formed in 1836 with four divisions at Manors, Westgate, Percy Street and East Ballast Hills, and twenty officers who had to be aged 25-45, able to read and write and able to pay £4 towards a uniform.  The force gradually expanded to a total of  710 in 1968.  In 1969 Newcastle City Police amalgamated  with Northumberland and Tynemouth to form the Northumberland Constabulary, which itself became part of Northumbria Police in 1974</dc:description>
