TitleDenton Road Primary School, Newcastle
Date1863 - 1999
AdminHistoryThe origins of Denton Road Primary School lie in Benwell Village School. This school predates its earliest surviving log book, which begins in 1863. In April 1870 the school was transferred from Benwell Village to Scotswood and became known as Scotswood Church of England School.

In 1884 the school appears to have been extended and re-organised into distinct Infants and Mixed departments. Upto 1902 the school was managed by Newcastle Diocesan Association but in that year control passed to Benwell School Board and the school was redesignated as Scotswood Board School. In the following year School Boards were abolished and responsibility passed briefly to Northumberland County Council Education Committee. In 1904 following local government re-organisation Scotswood became part of Newcastle upon Tyne and responsibility for the school passed to Newcastle City Council Education Committee.

By this time overcrowding and the condition of the Scotswood Council School premises had become serious problems. Newcastle City Council decided to replace the old premises with new buildings nearby, at the junction of Denton Road and Armstrong Road. The new school was officially opened on 16 September 1908 as Denton Road Council School.

In 1994 the Infants and Junior Departments were merged, the premises extended and the school redesignated as Denton Road Primary School. The school closed in 2000 owing to the poor condition of the buildings. The majority of the pupils were transferred to Broadwood Primary School.
